Welcome to the MSU Writing Center!

We are looking forward to working with you. Before proceeding to our scheduling system, please review these details about our modalities and locations.

Understanding Our Modalities

We offer four modalities for consultations across 10 schedules. With the exception of the Asynchronous schedule, all schedules represent physical locations and offer Face-to-Face, Zoom, and Google Docs appointments. The asynchronous modality is only available on the Asynchronous schedule and is the only modality offered on that schedule. The graphic below details the distinctions of each modality.

Understanding Our Locations

We offer Face-to-Face, Zoom, and Google Docs appointments in every location with the exception of Asynchronous. Most locations are marked with a Writing Center decal or banners. Please read the following Writing Center policies. Non-compliance might result in a ban from the system.

Typical appointments are 50 minutes long, beginning on the hour. 100 minute appointments are available by request, and must be approved by an administrator.

We have a 3 appointment per week limit due to usage averages across all semesters where we have waiting lists. This is to ensure 1) that everyone in the community we serve has an equitable chance to access our services and 2) to make time for clients to process the conversations had in their sessions, and 3) practice skills discussed with consultants to further develop their voices, skills, and confidence as writers. If you are out of appointments, here are some additional resources you can consult.

To inquire about possible disability accommodations while visiting The Writing Center, please email us at writing@msu.edu.

Appointments can be made up to two weeks in advance. If you have to miss an appointment, please cancel 12 hours in advance to open up the appointment for another client. If you miss three appointments, your account will be disabled. If this happens, email writing@msu.edu to set up a conversation with an administrator.

Students who are late for their appointments may forfeit their slot to walk-in clients. If you are more than 15 minutes late, your appointment will be marked as missed. Please call if you know you will be late 517-432-3610.

Making appointments using second accounts or friends accounts is strictly against WC policy and offenders will be blocked from the system immediately and for the duration of the semester.
